Au Pair: Birgit Schrittwieser from Austria
Host Family: Barnard-Bahn Family in Northern California

Birgit has brightened the lives of our family since she arrived in our Northern California home from Austria. She quickly bonded with our two girls with her attentive, sweet demeanor.
Every morning, Birgit greets us with a warm smile and a plate of freshly cut fruit. She packs our girls lunches and gets them ready for school, which is a huge help for two working parents.
She motivates our daughters to be their best, leading by example. Her kindness is infectious, yet she enforces limits and disciplines the girls when necessary.
Birgit loves to read, which matches very well with our girls. Although four-year-old Brynne Rose can’t read yet, she loves books and can often be seen in Birgit’s lap with book in hand.
Birgit has brought the rich culture of Austria into our home. She is an excellent cook, and has made apple strudel, roasted potatoes, fresh salads, and other wonderful dishes from her home.
Birgit takes her responsibilities seriously, and that rubs off on our children. Our eight-year-old Larkin gets a fair amount of homework, and Birgit helps Larkin to finish her studies on time.
Birgit has helped us through difficult times as well. Our longtime pet dog Bouche had a seizure and died while Birgit was preparing breakfast. Birgit handled the stress of the moment, and comforted our girls and our family in the days following.
As I write this, Brynne Rose is cuddling in her bed with Birgit, as she always keeps her heart open for our girls. We are so fortunate to have Birgit in our family, and she will always be in our hearts.
